The Michaela Saunders Appreciation Society

Q: Just who is Michaela Saunders?

A: Only the undoubted 'Voice of BBC Television' of the 1990's!

Q: Where can I hear her?

A: Once upon a time she could mostly be heard on BBC2, although she was known to make occasional forays into the mainstream on BBC1. More recently she has moved over to BBC Radio 7.

Q: So what's so special about her?

A: Michaela's links are intelligent but warm, displaying a wry sense of humour. But best of all is the teasing twinkle in her voice. Michaela has the juiciest voice of any announcer in the BBC's long history.

Q: Juicy?!

A: Well, that was the best way I could think to describe it. Her colleagues at BBC 7 have gone for a more earthy description, referring to Michaela as "the one with the dirty laugh." Which is also fair.

Q: How do you know her name?

A: When BBC2 closed down for the night, she somteimes signed off personally on behalf of her colleagues - a lovely touch, I always thought. Nowadays, of course, this is a sadly rare occurrence, as both BBC channels often run through the night.

Q: How long have you been a fan?

A: Since my student days, when I watched a lot of night-time telly - which was about 1993.

Q: What are you going to do about it?

A: I don't know. I once thought about writing and asking for a photo, but I wasn't sure if that was too wacky. I'm open to suggestions.

Q: Isn't that a photo up there?

A: Yes, it is. I stumbled across it on the BBC7 website earlier this year (2004). Nice to finally know what she looks like after all these years. Believe it or not, I thought she'd look like that. You can just tell!

[I should make it clear that this is just a bit of fun. My admiration for Michaela is purely on professional grounds, so she has no need to worry that there is a stalking element to all this. I'm too lazy to be a stalker anyway.]
