The first attempt at a replacement for Tiswas was Central TV's Saturday Show. Over the summer it was much-hyped, but when it arrived it failed to live up both to the hype, and to its predecessor.
Amusingly, the program was originally announced as "Big Daddy's Saturday Show" (see article fron Look-In, 5th June 1982), but come the autumn the fat oaf was nowhere to be seen. This was part of a big plug to present Crabtree as a kiddies' favourite (alongside his immortalisation in Buster comic as a kind of superhero). He was forced to bow out for health reasons (heart trouble, we believe). A waiting world was thus denied the opportunity to judge his presentational skills (which were presumably not as bad as you would think, though surely not much better).
The programme was presented instead by the ever-reliable Tommy Boyd, alongside former Generation Game co-host Isla "Scores on the doors" St. Clair. Notable features included 'Demolition Derby' - an elaborate go-cart race around the studio the outcome of which usually involved Boyd paying some kind of forfeit - and "What The Comics Say" (self-explanatory, one hopes).
The third series finally sought to give the programme its much needed kick up the arse by renaming it Saturday Starship.
